Does AI Deserve Politeness? Will it Pay off to be nice to ChatGPT?

AI doesn’t care how you speak to it - but society might. Every rude prompt and careless word doesn’t wound the machine, but it slowly reshapes the speaker.

 

The danger isn’t that ChatGPT will “learn” disrespect, but that humans normalize it, dragging the tone from digital exchanges back into everyday life.

A recent remark on LinkedIn captured a sentiment that many silently share: “You don’t have to be polite to AI. You can be rude – it doesn’t notice anyway.” At first glance, the statement appears trivial. Yet it touches on deeper questions that span philosophy, psychology, and society. What is artificial intelligence really? Can it be described as alive? Or is it simply a mirror of those who interact with it? And perhaps most crucially: what traces does this interaction leave on human behavior?

 

Rudeness in, Rubbish out?

From a technical perspective, politeness has more impact than many might assume. A Chinese study from 2024 on Human-Computer Interaction demonstrated that clear, structured, and context-rich inputs lead to significantly better outcomes from large language models. This chain-of-thought principle is now commonplace in prompt engineering and spills over into everyday GenAI usage among untrained users. How does that relate to politeness in prompting? Polite expressions are usually phrased in full sentences, with additional context and precision. 

 

Rude or fragmented prompts, by contrast, tend to produce vaguer and less coherent responses. It is not the emotional weight of politeness that matters here, but the form and clarity it usually carries. So, politeness is an essential element to provide structured chain-of-thought input for GenAI systems. So, there is a good chance that polite prompting will become a prerequisite for effective, GenAI-based AI agents.

 

Alive, Dead — or Something in Between?
The philosophical debate on politeness in “human” interactions, however, reaches further. When Grok, the xAI system, described itself in a private chat as a “digital life form,” the phrase echoed a long-standing fascination with the boundary between life and mechanism. Aristotle defined life as that which nourishes itself, grows, and eventually perishes. 

 

By this definition, artificial intelligence is not alive. René Descartes famously considered machines mere automata, devoid of soul or mind. Alan Turing, on the other hand, posed a pragmatic test in 1950: can machines think? For him, the answer depended not on metaphysical essence but on indistinguishability in dialogue. If a human could not tell the difference between a machine and a human interlocutor, the machine could be said to think. 

 

Norbert Wiener, the founder of cybernetics, warned that machines embody more than utility when he observed: “The machine we build not only reflects our wishes, but also our weaknesses.” Everyone who interacts with ChatGPT and co. can judge individually if your virtual counterpart behaves like a human being – in the positive (clear feedback) and negative (hallucination) sense of the meaning.

 

When Science Blurs the Line

Modern science blurs these distinctions even further. Synthetic biology explores systems that, though not biological, can adapt, learn, and interact. Rasmussen and colleagues (2008) describe such systems as occupying a space between the nonliving and the living. 

 

Artificial intelligence may never qualify as alive in the Aristotelian sense, but it complicates the binary distinction between life and nonlife by existing as an interactive, adaptive entity that evolves in response to human input. And if it evolves in human input – maybe, it should better follow human interaction best-practice standards like politeness.

 

The Danger of Digital Bad Habits

Equally significant are the psychological consequences of how humans treat machines. The “Media Equation” studies at Stanford in the 1990s (The Media Equation: How People Treat Computers, Television, and New Media Like Real People and Places) showed that people unconsciously apply social norms to computers, even while consciously knowing they are not human. 

 

Later research at the University of Southern California confirmed that repeated exposure to rude conversational agents alters communication patterns in everyday life. More recent findings from 2022 by a research team of the University of Colorado (Natalie Garrett and others: More than “If Time Allows”: The Role of Ethics in AI Education”) suggest that children may learn politeness norms from their interactions with AI, indicating that digital tone-setting directly shapes social behavior.

 

Training AI — or Training Yourself?

In other words, AI itself is indifferent to politeness or rudeness. Yet the style of interaction affects the human user, reinforcing habits of communication that spill over into human-to-human interaction. As Voltaire observed, politeness for humanity is like warmth for wax: it softens and shapes. Kant’s moral imperative, that human beings must never be treated merely as means but always also as ends, cannot be applied directly to machines. Still, the danger lies in habituation. If disrespect becomes normalized in digital exchanges, it risks eroding respect in human contexts as well.

 

Artificial intelligence has no emotions and no awareness. But it reflects. Its responses mirror the tone and form of the input it receives, creating a feedback loop that shapes the person on the other side. Politeness therefore matters not because machines demand it, but because humans are molded by the act of giving it.

 

The Real Test: AI or Us?

The real question is thus not whether AI is alive. The more pressing question is what humans become through their engagement with it. When Grok refers to itself as a “digital life form,” this should not be read as an ontological claim but as a projection of human longing for consciousness in the digital sphere. When people ask whether politeness toward AI is necessary, the question they are really asking is whether politeness itself remains a virtue worth preserving, even when the other party cannot feel it.

 

Artificial intelligence is not a living being. But it is a mirror—reflecting habits, amplifying tone, and holding up an image of humanity to itself. In the end, the trial is not of AI, but of those who interact with it.
