Startups built on vague AI narratives reached multi-billion-dollar valuations, established vendors relabeled existing software as “AI-powered,” and entire industries began framing their strategic relevance around artificial intelligence. Not because they fully understood it, but because they could not afford not to mention it.

 

The Role of the Media: Amplifier Rather Than Observer

The media did not initiate this development, but it significantly amplified it. AI is ideally suited to the attention economy: abstract, difficult to verify, emotionally charged, and visually representable. Headlines about “thinking machines,” “job killers,” or “superintelligence” generate reach regardless of analytical rigor.

 

This created a structural distortion. Complex technical systems were reduced to simplified narratives—either utopian solutions or dystopian threats. Both perspectives obscure reality. Little attention was paid to data dependency, model limitations, energy consumption, legal uncertainty, integration costs, or the organizational realities of deployment.

 

Media outlets, technology companies, and investors entered a mutually reinforcing feedback loop. Attention drove valuation. Valuation produced headlines. Differentiation consistently lost to exaggeration.

 

Is AI Truly That Helpful—or Primarily Well Marketed?

AI is helpful. But it is not magical. In practice, a growing gap is emerging between demonstrative capability and productive effectiveness. Many systems perform impressively in isolated scenarios, yet struggle in real-world processes due to poor data quality, missing governance, regulatory uncertainty, limited acceptance, or simple economic infeasibility.

 

Particularly problematic is the assumption that AI replaces human judgment. In reality, it redistributes responsibility. Decisions are not automated; they are depersonalized. The incentive structure is clear. Major technology firms leverage AI narratives to secure their role as infrastructural power centers. Whoever controls models, compute, platforms, and data controls value creation. Startups benefit from valuation dynamics, investors from short-term return expectations, and governments from the promise of geopolitical competitiveness.

 

AI has thus become more than a technology. It is a strategic power instrument. In this context, exaggeration is not accidental; it is functional. Expectations fuel investment. Investment consolidates market power. Market power establishes facts.

 

What Happens When the AI Bubble Deflates?

When the bubble deflates, it will not do so through a dramatic collapse, but through gradual disillusionment. Projects will fail to deliver promised results. Costs will exceed benefits. Regulatory pressure will increase. Investors will become more selective.

 

Many organizations will realize that they never had an AI strategy—only AI rhetoric. Startups lacking substance will disappear, valuations will correct, budgets will tighten. At the same time, the ecosystem will become healthier. Focus will shift from vision to execution, from buzzwords to verifiable use cases.

 

Historically, this is not failure but maturation. After the dot-com bubble, the internet did not disappear—it became viable. AI is likely to follow the same trajectory.

 

The Overlooked Factors: Energy, Power, and Responsibility

What remains largely absent from public discourse are the systemic side effects. AI is energy-intensive and exacerbates environmental trade-offs. It concentrates power among a small number of actors. It reshapes knowledge production, education, and labor markets faster than institutions can adapt.

 

Most critically, it displaces responsibility. The more decisions are algorithmically pre-structured, the greater the risk that no one is accountable—only that a system “recommended” an outcome.

 

Indicated Actions: What Must Change Now—and What Will Follow

If we accept that we are in an AI bubble, the key question is no longer whether it will burst, but how we move through the correction phase. Bubbles rarely explode. They deflate. And therein lies the opportunity.

 

  1. Governments must shift from vision to order: AI has so far been treated primarily as a competitiveness narrative. What is now required are clear liability frameworks, transparency obligations, binding standards for high-risk applications, and robust governance structures. Fewer pilot projects, more regulation where AI exerts real power.
  2. Investors must once again distinguish substance from narrative: The next phase will not reward limitless scaling, but depth of integration, domain expertise, and economic viability. Valuations will fall. Capital will become selective. This is not a crisis, but a market correction.
  3. Technology corporations will grow quieter—but more powerful: AI will increasingly disappear as a standalone product and become invisible infrastructure. The central political debate of the coming years will not revolve around innovation, but around access, control, and digital sovereignty.
  4. Startups must emancipate themselves from the AI label: Those relying solely on AI as a marketing differentiator will vanish. Those using AI as a tool to solve clearly defined problems will endure. The next startup generation will be less glamorous—but more resilient.
  5. Society must demystify AI: AI is not an actor. It makes no decisions. It pursues no interests. Attributing agency to systems relieves humans of responsibility—and that is dangerous. The debate must move from superintelligence to accountability, from spectacle to implementation.

 

Will the AI Bubble Burst?

Yes. But not spectacularly. It will deflate through disappointment, budget cuts, abandoned projects, and recalibrated expectations. That correction is necessary.

 

What remains afterward will not be ruins, but a cleared field. Fewer promises, fewer illusions—more reality. AI will persist. But it will become quieter. Less mythological, less absolute, and ultimately more effective.

 

There will be no limitless growth. And that may be the most important realization of all.

Not every powerful technology must grow without bounds to be meaningful. Some must first shrink—in ambition, tone, and mythology—before they can deliver lasting value.
